Great Yarmouth Town Hall
A programme of works was completed in 2008 following a reassessment of the internal spaces and accommodation. The Borough Council wished to make better use of the underused areas in the Grade 11* listed building and to bring more staff into the building from satellite offices. The central open lightwell had been built over to provide staff WCs. These were demolished and relocated and the lightwell glazed over to create a three storey atrium thereby rationalising and celebrating the vertical circulation with a glazed lift.
Following administrative changes, the council chamber was too large and it was re located in the old courtroom that had not been used for decades. A veritable time capsule, the fixtures and fitting were repurposed to create a new council chamber with state of the art IT facilities and communications. The old council chamber became office accommodation and elsewhere in the building working areas were reordered.
The large Assembly Room, with its high ceiling has full height windows overlooking the quay and was completely refurbished with a new colour scheme, gold brocade drapes and specially designed carpets. New building services were installed throughout.
