St John's Church
The Church of St John the Evangelist is grade 11 listed but no longer used as a place of worship. Founded as a chapel for beachmen and fishermen it was designed by JH Hakewill in the 1850s with numerous further additions including a south aisle, nave extension, north aisle, transept and north chancel. The result is an uncommonly pretty church with decorative details referencing the fishermen and their trade such as family names on the pews and seaweed capitals to the north aisle columns.
Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust have worked with Jeremy Stacey Architects on a feasibility study that explores the restoration and interventions required for various uses that would ensure the continuing viability of the structure. Glamping, or ‘Champing’ is the favoured option and design work is in progress to provide individual sleeping, washing and wc facilities in individual ‘pods’ that will sit lightly within the historic fabric and provide overnight accommodation for up to 20 ‘champers’.
