Historic King Street Regeneration
The practice has preserved, remodelled and extend several Grade 11 listed properties in King Street for the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust that was established in 1979 to address the decline of the heritage assets in the town. In all properties the approach of minimal intervention was adopted but potentially harmful materials such as modern non breathable external paint and inappropriate replacement windows were removed.
Number 133 is a late 17th century merchant’s house with an attached warehouse. It was purchased by the Trust before it fell into terminal decline and now has Skippings Art Gallery on the ground floor with four artists’ studios for rent in the former warehouse to the rear, a work live unit and a three bedroomed residential unit. The ethos of the project was to support the vibrant art community in the town and to contribute to the regeneration of the street.
Numbers 33, 34 and 135 are also 17th century town houses. Number 33 was a restaurant before it was purchased by the Trust. The buildings have been converted to offices and residential accommodation.
