Private House in Suffolk
The brief was to provide a spacious and comfortable dwelling incorporating an existing timber-framed cottage within the Nayland Conservation Area in Suffolk. The design of the extension is uncompromisingly modern contrasting with the traditional form of the cottage. A glazed link separating the two elements allows each architectural interpretation to stand on its own.
Free flowing living spaces inform the massing of the extension providing a variety of levels and volumes that exploit the views and the natural slope of the site. Here a sedum roof has been used together with a palette of coloured render, and larch cladding is used to modulate the external envelope.
Lime based materials on walls and ground floors have been used in the restoration of the cottage allowing the oak structure to breath and eliminating the dampness caused by previous cement repairs.
